Fabrication (knitting construction)

Warp knitted [ref.ISO 8388]

Warp knitted is a type of knitted fabric construction in which the yarns are formed into stitches in a lengthwise manner. Warp knits are generally less elastic than weft knits. Common examples of warp knits are tricot knits and raschel knits.

Netting material

100% polyester [ref. ISO 1833]

Polyester does have many advantages over cotton: it is more durable, gives more ventilation and there is less insecticide loss within the fibres. Polyester has better quality control, and is more popular.

Type of filament

multi-filament, 36 filaments or higher

Filament: A manufactured fiber of indefinite length (continuous), extruded from the spinneret during the fiber production process

Mesh size

minimum 156 holes/inch² [25 holes/cm²]

Mesh: A type of fabric characterized by its net-like open appearance, and the spaces between the yarns. Mesh is available in a variety of constructions including wovens, knits, laces, or crocheted fabrics.

Denier

75 or 100 [ISO 2060, DUPRO]

Denier: A system of measuring the weight of a continuous filament fiber. In the United States, this measurement is used to number all manufactured fibers (both filament and staple), and silk, but excluding glass fiber. The lower the number, the finer the fiber; the higher the number, the heavier the fiber. Numerically, a denier is the equivalent to the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of continuous filament fiber.

Weight

75 denier: 30 g/m², 100 denier: 40 g/m² [ISO 3801]

Mass per unit area (GSM) does not apply to any standards. For the warp-knitted polyester netting, the weight is closely linked to denier of the yarn and to the mesh count. When appropriate, weight should be measured according to standard ISO 3801 (1977), with pre-conditioning to ISO 139 (2005) (4 hrs., 20°C, 65%RH).

World Health Organization recommends the suitable deniers are 75 and 100, whereas the minimum mesh size is 156 holes/inch². Accordingly the netting material made up with 75 and 100 denier yarn shall have the GSM below:
Denier 75 =30 gram/² ± 5%
Denier 100 = 40 gram/² ±5%

Dimensional stability to washing

Shrinkage less than 5% [ISO 5077]

WHO specifications state that shrinkage in either direction of the netting material should be no more than 5%. Most commonly netting material is heated and pulled into shape during the production process (heat-setting) to achieve the correct mesh count but nonetheless nets can be sensitive to the temperature at which they are subsequently washed.

Bursting strength

75 denier: minimum 220 Kpa [ISO 2960], 100 denier: minimum 350 Kpa

Bursting strength: A measure of the ability of a material to withstand pressure without rupture
According to the ISO standard, bursting strength can be measured on areas of netting material measuring 7.3 cm²

Fire safety

16 [CFR 1610]

Polyester is a flammability Class 1 material (non-flammable) according to 16 CFR Part 1610. In a study on the flammability of netting materials, 10 samples of commercially available polyester samples were tested according to EN 1102 and 16 CFR Part 1610 (WHO, unpublished data). All samples were classified as non-flammable according to both standards.

Labeling

On the net: size; name of manufacturer; brand name; fibre composition; water uptake per net (if intended for treatment in the field). Standard pictograms for washing should also appear on a label attached to the net. There should be 5 pictograms (according to ISO 3758) indicating: gentle wash at no more than 30 °C; no bleaching; no use of a drying machine; no ironing; and no dry cleaning.
